June 4,5,6 - 2004
Not much to report this weekend, except to say that the "Race of
Champions" did not happen. We showed up at the track all ready for
some strong competition and no one else showed up to race Colin.
So we worked very hard to make the car fast on Friday and used
the 1600 cars as a bench mark. The track was very hot and slippery
this weekend. It was a great challenge to make rear grip and keep
the car from being very loose.
We have some fantastic in car video of Colin catching massive
slides as we fought to tune the cars balance. By the end of the day
we got it much better on the old worn out tires from the last race
at Thunderhill.
Qualifying on Saturday went well and Colin only did a warm up lap
and 2 timed laps to set a time. He was 6 seconds faster than the
1600 pole and that was where we should be. The best thing was the
car was well balanced and had the rear grip we needed.
Saturday the race was another non event, Colin lapped the entire
1600 field with 2 laps to go. We decided to not spend any money on
a new set of tires for Sunday and skip the morning warm up.
Saturday night the guys at CT Motorsports asked Colin to shake down
a 1600 car that they were having problems with. So we got up early
and Colin did the warm up in the #8 normally driven by Ken Lee.
Unfortunately the engine was still not performing right, but
Colin had fun in the car. The CT guys were very nice to let Colin
take some laps.
Sunday was uneventful and Colin took pole and won the race again
against NO ONE! The good news was that he clinched the championship
for the 2nd year in a row, and that can't be a bad thing for the
resume.
Ace Carrio won the 1600 race Sunday to make it a Speed Secrets
sweep today. Now it is on to testing the Latus Motors Pro Mazda in
preparation for Colin's first race as a 16 year old at Road Atlanta
in September.
