11-5-2006 - People talking about Colin and NASCAR

Sports Car Driver looking for NASCAR gig: Visiting both the Nextel Cup and Busch Series garages at Texas Motor Speedway was 18-year-old sports car phenom Colin Braun. Braun, who hails from nearby Ovalo, Texas, already has made a name for himself in sports cars as the youngest driver ever to win a professional sports car event. Now he has set his sights on a career in NASCAR. "This is where I want to be," Braun said. "This [has] the best drivers that there are and that’s who I want to race against." Braun was one of 16 who took part in last month's GM Driver Evaluation program, which tested drivers from across the country on three different types of tracks. Word is that Braun did very well in his first time in a stock car. Although he is set to once again drive for Grand American Series champion Krohn Racing in 2007, he'd like to get his NASCAR career started by running the Busch Series road course events at Mexico City, Montreal and Watkins Glen. Braun hopes that a good showing in one of those races would spark interest in a team giving him a full-time Busch ride.(Yahoo Sports)(11-5-2006)

I have been listening the to the "talking heads" on TV discuss how there aren't any drivers to choose from in the next few years. The basic argument that there is not enough talent to go around the NASCAR racing world. I don't agree and here's why:

  • NASCAR has made the Busch Series into a "practice session" for the Nextel Cup Series (No example needed).
  • Young drivers are chewed up and spit out in less than a year (example: KHI's Burney Lamar, who was the next big thing in Daytona, out of a job by October)
  • Lots of young drivers jump from other series to get into NASCAR (A. J. Allmendinger, Colin Braun?)

The first argument about NASCAR their situation out can be viewed on a weekly basis when 8 out of the top 10 drivers are in Cup full-time. Initially, NASCAR wanted a couple of "Cuppers" to come in, put on a good show, build the ratings and then leave. Now, more than a handful of drivers are racing both series to obtain more knowledge about the track ("extended test"). The latest announcement was Dave Blaney, who announced today that he will race his Toyota in both series. So, with major sponsors and race teams in tow, the "Busch Whackers" come in and take experience and track time away from a young kid. The only savior in this process is that in 2007 the "Car of Tomorrow" will be on the track, so Cuppers won't want to waste time in a series where information does not transfer.

Some people are not so excited about it.........

Ramblings of a 26 year old writer, film maker, photographer and NASCAR/music fanatic.

Great, another out-of-series bug looking to infect NASCAR

I'm tired of all of these drivers from other sports coming into NASCAR and wanting in. It's fine for one guy to do it... I mean, Tony Stewart did it years ago, Ryan came from USAC too and so did JJ. Hell even Juan Paul Montoya was all good, at least he drove for Ganassi and is still going to drive for him... just in another type of racing series, but... damn. This damn Allmedinger, Pullmyfinger, whatever his name is and now another one is wanting in. STOP IT! There's good drivers out there... hello, Ward Burton?
