Mid Ohio
- The Krohn Racing team took its third podium in the Daytona
Prototype class Saturday, June 23rd, in the EMCO
Gears Classic presented by KeyBank race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car
Course in Lexington, Ohio. The No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Riley
of qualifying driver Max Papis and co-driver Colin Braun
finished in third place in the seventh of 14 Grand-Am Rolex
Sports Car races this season.

The
polesitting No. 99 Gainsco Pontiac Riley of Alex Gurney and Jon
Fogarty took their third victory, two in a row, in the 111-lap,
two-and-one half hour race at the 2.258-mile road course, on
which passing seemed nearly impossible.
The No. 01
Ganassi Lexus Riley team of drivers Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas
continue to lead the 2007 Prototype points championship
(unofficially) with 212 points. The No. 75 Krohn Racing entry
maintains fourth place in the championship with 179 points.
Tracy W.
Krohn, team owner/driver, No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Riley:
The team did a
great job. The team result with Colin and Max in third was just
fantastic.
Max
Papis, driver, No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Riley:
“We really have
to take off the hats to David Brown and all the guys on the team
because we started the weekend not very good and we ended up on
the podium. That’s a great improvement. I felt than on my stint,
the track was very green in the beginning. I was very cautious
about not abusing my tires. I tried to back off and have
patience in the beginning to wait for the grip from the track. I
was able to push the last 12 laps and close up the gap to the
No. 01 car, our closest contender. My goal was getting into the
pits as close as possible, having a good “in” lap and giving the
car to Colin with the closest margin compared to the leader.
I want to say
hats off to the 99 car. They were the class of the field, but we
are working to close up the gap. It was great to be on the
podium again. Colin, as usual, did a good job in the car and was
able to stay trouble-free and he drove a very smart race. We
were able to capitalize on the 58 car when they were short on
fuel. Today we maximized everything we had in our hand.”
Colin
Braun, driver, No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Riley:
“The race went
really well. We didn’t start out this weekend as we would have
liked to but the crew guys and David Brown (race engineer) did a
heck of a job. The crew guys really worked their butts off this
whole weekend and my thanks go to those guys. They worked so
hard. We forced the car into being a good, competitive car. Max
and I just got to drive it. It was a very hard race but
certainly was close and tight and there was hardly any room to
pass. It was so close that it almost made it no fun because you
couldn’t even try to pass.
This race was
great for us. I’m sure it will help us out with the points. We
have a test coming up at Barber (Motorsports Park), where we can
learn even more, and hopefully be as competitive as the 99 car
has been lately.”
Jeff
Hazell, Krohn Racing Team Manager:
Regarding the
75 car, we were very tight on fuel at the end of the race. David
Brown (race engineer) called the fuel exactly right. We slept
through most of the race until we thought we were going to be
tight on fuel, and then it got our attention. We are all rather
humiliated by the speed on the 99 car and we have work to do. It
wasn’t a bad weekend but we are always unhappy when we are not
in first place. Just being on the podium is not enough.”
The next race, Round 8 of 14,
will be the Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona International Speedway
on July 5, 2007. The race will be
televised live on Thursday night, July 5th, on SPEED
TV at 8:00 p.m. EDT.
